Da Vinci Surgery

Da Vinci surgery, also known as robotic surgery or computer-assisted surgery, is an amazing technological advance to allow more cases to be done thru small incisions. The advantage to the patient includes less pain, less blood loss, less risk of infection, shorter hospital stay, and quicker recovery and return to normal activities.

The advantage to the physician is 3D vision with a magnified view, articulation of the instrument in all directions – mimics the physician’s wrist movements, operation in a comfortable position, making stitching much easier and more precise, and … it is fun! All these features allow complex procedures to be done through a few tiny openings.

The most common uses for the da Vinci Surgical System in our practice are for:

  • Hysterectomy – removal of the uterus and cervix, especially if the uterus is large or other pathology is present, such as scar tissue, endometriosis, or prolapse.
  • Myomectomy – removal of fibroids from the uterus. This procedure involves a lot of precise suturing, which the da Vinci allows for.
  • Sacralcolpopexy – lifting the apex of the vagina up by attaching the vaginal walls to mesh that is then tacked to the sacrum. This is for patients with prolapse issues.

NovaSure Endometrial Ablation

NovaSure is a 90-second, minimally invasive treatment for your heavy periods. The NovaSure procedure is an endometrial ablation, meaning a way to permanently remove the inner lining of the uterus that produces the period, thus causing no or less period flow each month. This quick procedure with rapid recovery can be done in the office or outpatient setting and is a treatment alternative to a hysterectomy and a choice that avoids the potential side effects of hormone therapy. NovaSure not only reduces or eliminates menstrual bleeding but also decreases cramping and PMDD symptoms associated with the period.

The results of the NovaSure procedure are excellent, with >50% of patients never having another period in their lifetime, >40% of the remaining patients having improvement in their bleeding and symptoms, and thus, >90% are happy with their results. Only women who are done with their fertility and have a reliable form of birth control are candidates for this procedure.

Any woman who has completed her childbearing and is experiencing periods and associated symptoms that adversely affect her life may be a good candidate for NovaSure endometrial ablation. All women should have a complete workup to evaluate the cause of heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) before having any treatment to optimize results and minimize the need for further treatment.
